Hi, I'm Lisa Martin

I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, the second of 3 daughters born to a Detroit Public School teacher and a warden with the Michigan Department of Corrections. We attended a small private school while my parents finished college and graduate school at Wayne State University. I attended Detroit Public Schools beginning with middle school, eventually graduating from Cass Technical High School. I received my undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts before returning to Michigan to earn my juris doctorate at the University of Michigan Law School. After becoming a licensed attorney in November 1998, I worked as a law clerk for Judge John Foley in the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court before returning to Detroit to represent indigent parties as an attorney with the Legal Aid and Defender Association in Detroit. From 2001 to 2018, I worked in private practice, representing regional and national clients. In April 2018, I became the Attorney Magistrate of the 34th District Court after being appointed by the Court’s Chief Judge. As Attorney Magistrate, I conducted criminal arraignments, presided over Small Claims trials, presided over disputed traffic citations and conducted in-court mediations until leaving the court in February 2020.

Volunteering and community involvement is an important part of my life. I  have served on many boards and am currently involved with the following organizations: Healthy Kidz, Inc. – President, Michigan Area Loan Fund – Member, Operation Refuge - Director, State Bar of Michigan Character & Fitness Committee, State Bar of Michigan Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee – Advisor and United Methodist Union of Greater Detroit – Trustee.

I have called Van Buren Township my home for the last 13 years. My husband Kevin and I are proud residents of Van Buren Township with our pets. In addition to being a Township Trustee, Kevin has worked at General Motors for more than 40 years. We are passionate about being of service in the community and promoting civic engagement.

I am proud to have finished the August 4, 2020 Primary Election as the top vote-getter. On to the General Election on November 3rd.

Equality Meets Opportunity

I am running for 34th District Court Judge because I believe that every person that comes before the court should have equal access to our justice system.  Additionally, everyone should have the opportunity to stand before a judge who is impartial and fair.  Running a courtroom requires someone who has the patience to attend to the details of a person’s statements and the compassion to help those who are perhaps dealing with a life-altering experience.  I have spent more than 20 years appearing in the district courts in the state and almost two years as Attorney Magistrate in the 34th District Court.  I have the experience and temperament necessary to ensure that my courtroom would be one where every person is treated with courtesy and respect.
